Michael's area of interest includes analysis of spatial data, 3D visualization, modeling complex landforms and processes, teaching GIS and GISci, and mentoring geoscientists. In 2020, Michael mentored a team of students in the National Geothermal Design Challenge who won the contest with the poster, “Geothermal Locality Index: Where to Find ‘The Heat Beneath Our Feet'”.
I am a teaching faculty member in this amazing department. I don’t have a research focus; as the Director of the online M.S. degree program in Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis, I focus on my student’s outcomes. At present, I preside over a group of nearly 40 graduate students all seeking a better life through higher education. Our program is a new but rapidly growing asynchronous online degree program designed to facilitate equitability in access to advanced training and education across a range of degree seekers.
My Interests
- Spatial Modeling, Geovisualization, & Data Analysis
- Water Quality, Clean Energy, Environmental and Economic Sustainability
- Exploring the effects of physical space on problems and solutions
- Using AI as a teaching & learning resource
- Upsetting paradigms, erasing stereotypes, & surprising people
Why Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis?
- We need more people highly trained in the geospatial sciences, and our program is answering that call.
- GIS is a force for solving problems, finding solutions, and working across academic boundaries.
- Because we have an opportunity to provide graduate students, recent college graduates, working professionals, individuals interested in a career transition, and those hoping to advance within the field a chance to flourish.
